Granny Smith, Gala Apples Recalled for Listeria Risk

January 8, 2015 — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued an update to warn that Gala apples and Granny Smith apples imported from the United States by California-based Bidart Brothers have been recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria.

The recall includes “Big B” brand Gala apples and Granny Smith apples and “Granny’s Best” brand Granny Smith apples. The recall includes all production in 2014.

Only apples exported by Bidart Brothers are included in the recall. The recalled products may have been sold. If you are not sure whether your apples are included in the recall, contact the location where they were purchased.

Candy apples contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes have been linked to an outbreak of food poisoning that has infected at least 32 people in 11 states. In Canada, at least two cases of listeriosis (one case in Ontario, one case in Manitoba) have the same genetic fingerprint as seen in the United States.

Many people who are exposed to Listeria do not actually develop symptoms. The illness is usually only severe in people who have weak immune systems, older adults, and young children. In pregnant women, infection can cause the loss of an unborn baby.

Symptoms of listeriosis may include:

• Fever
• Muscle aches
• Nausea
• Diarrhea

At least three children under 15 years old have developed invasive meningitis. Symptoms of this severe complication may include:

• Headache
• Poor coordination
• Seizures
• Neck stiffness
