Australia, New Zealand Warn of DMAA Risks, Consider Ban

June 20, 2012 — Australian and New Zealand health officials are warning people to not consume products containing DMAA, and throw them away immediately. Officials at the agency will be meeting soon to discuss whether to ban DMAA products. The stimulant drug is known to increase blood pressure heart rate, which could cause heart problems during exercise or intense partying. It has also been linked to psychological and nervous system disorders.

There is currently a global crackdown on DMAA. The actions by Australian and New Zealand authorities joins actions from officials in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Denmark. Furthermore, the World Anti-Doping Agency banned DMAA in athletes back in 2010.

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) says that they are currently in the process of testing products for adulteration with DMAA. So far, 11 of 12 products have tested positive for the substance. FSANZ officials are advising consumers to get rid of the products. The agency will also be meeting soon to discuss banning DMAA, saying that they problem must be “urgently discussed.”

DMAA is a synthetic, stimulant drug known by many names — usually 1,3-dimethylamylamine, methylhexanamine, or “geranium extract.” Though manufacturers have long claimed that DMAA is a natural botanical extract from the geranium plant, there is little evidence to support this, and the FDA has asserted that DMAA is in fact a synthetic drug. The FDA has sent 10 different manufacturers warning letters. Following the deaths of two soldiers who had DMAA in their bloodstream, the U.S. military banned all sales of DMAA products on military bases.
